John VanLeeuwen D.V.M., M.Sc., Ph.D.
Principle Investigator/Project Director,
This website is dedicated to informing others about the integrated veterinary and nutrition programs that have been running in Kenya since 2015 (although there were efforts in these areas that date back to the first time UPEI faculty and students went to Kenya in 2004).

The program is led by Dr. John VanLeeuwen who is a professor of epidemiology and ruminant health management at the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island. He position is half-time clinician and half-time epidemiologist, emphasizing the importance of epidemiology to clinical veterinary practice. This combined position gives him a unique set of skills for leading this project which  combines clinical practice, teaching, training and research. He is supported by a stellar group of other professors at UPEI: Jennifer Taylor (nutritionist), Colleen Walton (nutritionist), Charlene VanLeeuwen (family scientist) Shawn McKenna (ruminant vet), Luke Heider (ruminant vet), Collins Kamunde (toxicologist), Spencer Greenwood (parasitologist), Crawford Revie (epidemiologist), Anne Muckle (microbiologist), Juan Carlos Rodriguez (Immunologist), and Tim Goddard (education). There are collaborators from other universities, including University of Guelph (Jeff Wichtel), Nairobi University (George Gitau) and Kenyatta University (Lucy Kathuri, Irene Ogala, and Judith Munga). Partners on the project include Farmers Helping Farmers  and the Dairy Groups, Women’s Groups and schools in Kenya.  You can find more information on some of these partners in the Links section of the webpage.
